FOE Cluster sets up Legal Defence Fund

The Freedom of Expression Cluster has set up a Legal Defence Fund to aid those who are facing investigation and prosecution as a result of peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression.

Anyone who is facing investigation or prosecution due to exercising their right to freedom of expression may apply to receive assistance from the Legal Defence Fund. Additional assistance is available for human rights defenders. "The general purpose is to provide legal assistance to people whose freedom of expression as constitutionally guaranteed has been violated, and also to provide assistance in this situation where there are limited resources available to the person affected, in order to effectively access his or her rights to legal representation," said Wathshlah Naidu, Executive Director of the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ). The FOE Cluster is co-chaired by CIJ and Article 19 Malaysia.
